Thinking of a Concept

From doing research I decided that a romantic comedy film would be a good genre as teenagers nowadays are able to relate to most narratives. To gather some ideas I noted down some concepts of what to include in my main task. I created a Glogster to present my ideas. This eventually gave me a rough idea of how I could construct a potential narrative in which I presented to my peers and teacher before narrowing down the initial ideas.

Initial Ideas

When coming up with an initial idea, I first created a mind map to gather some ideas and after decided to create an emaze presentation to split up my ideas into narrative, character analysis, filming locations and camera shots/angles. This helped me to decide what type of storyline I wanted create and the type of characters I would.

Moodboard

When analysing different posters of romantic comedies, I noticed that the majority of the film titles are in black and red bold font, therefore this is something I will take into account when designing my own brand for my film. All titles are also one or two words long, short and snappy, to highlight the comedic element of the film. A code and convention that I will also take into consideration is the fact that most film posters include a plain white background with the protagonists on the front. For my ancillary tasks I will consider creating something similar to these to follow the romantic comedy theme.

Seeking Locations and Permissions

For the main scene of my short film, 'the date', I plan to film in a restaurant called 'ASK Italian' as the interior of the restaurant looks quite vibrant which means it will provide high key lighting when filming inside.High key lighting is one of the key codes and conventions for a romantic comedy as it represents the light-heartedness of the genre and also highlights the characters' facial expressions. For all my potential locations I have listed the pros and cons of each setting so that I can asses the things I need to be aware of, therefore helping me when filming and editing. However, before filming in these locations, it is compulsory that I ask for permission first by emailing or contacting the people directly.

Shot Lists and Script

When planning for my short film I created a script for my actors, followed by shot lists in order to plan the types of shots and camera angles I will use for each scene. Using Celtx helped me to plan the script for my actors on for their dialogue, actions and body language. This also helped me to analyse and take down notes on anything that I was unsure about before sharing it with my actors, for example, certain things the actor will say such as 'pick up lines' or 'cheesy jokes to follow the comedic genre of the film. For this I used a website called www.thoughtcatalog.com to decide what types of jokes I could include.

Shooting and Editing Schedule for main and ancillary task

For the branding of my film I wanted to create a logo that would look similar to most romantic comedies. Examples I looked at that I previously mentioned were 'The Proposal' and 'Bride Wars'. Below I have provided the link to my padlet where I discuss the process when choosing my brand logo.
